Here at HelloFresh, we’re all about classic Canadian eats. Since you can’t go wrong with dessert, we’re sharing a delectable Quebec treat, Chômeur Pudding.

Created during the Great Depression, Chômeur pudding literally translates to “Pudding of the Unemployed” or “Poor Man’s Pudding.” Similar to a bread pudding, each bite of this maple-filled dessert is so deliciously rich, you’d never know it was born in a factory.

Fair warning: This is one SWEET treat.

    WHAT YOU NEED:

    For Maple Sauce:

    • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
    • 1 Cup Maple Syrup
    • 1 Cup Water, boiling
    • 1 Tablespoon Butter, non-salted

    For Cake:

    • 1/4 Cup Butter
    • 1 Egg, beaten
    • 1/2 Cup Sugar
    • 1 Cup Flour
    • 1/3 Cup Cream, 35%
    • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
    • 2 Teaspoon Baking Powder

In a small pot, whisk together the brown sugar, boiling water, maple syrup and 2 tbsp butter. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring often, for 8-10 minutes until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let cool for 5-7 mins.

    MIX WET INGREDIENTS

In a large bowl, cream together ¼ cup butter and the granulated sugar with an electric mixer, until mixture is light yellow, 1-2 min. Add the egg and cream. Cream together until the butter-sugar mixture is smooth.

Add the flour, baking powder and salt to the large bowl with the butter mixture. Stir, scraping down any flour on the sides of the bowl, until all the dry ingredients are fully combined.

    ASSEMBLE CAKE

Pour the cake mixture into a greased 9×13 baking dish. Spread with a spatula into an even layer.
