4 Hot Dog Topping Ideas for Summer!

    From Taco dogs to Banh Mi dogs, these unique hot dog topping ideas are sure to elevate your summer BBQs.

    Canadian summers are short and sweet, so don’t waste those precious sunny days on boring hot dogs and give these unique topping ideas a try.

    The Taco Dog

    Why limit yourself to taco shells? With a little guac you can turn your hot dog into a taco extravaganza.

    The Toppings:

    • Guacamole
    • Tomatoes, 1/4 inch cubes
    • Corn Kernels
    • Sour Cream
    • Cilantro

    If you want your guac homemade, we’ve got you covered:

    Homemade Guacamole:

    • 1 Avocado
    • 10g Garlic
    • 1 Lime

    Peel and cut the avocado(es) into 1/2-inch cubes. In a small bowl, add the avocado, garlic, and the juice of half a lime. Using a fork, mash together until creamy. Season with salt and pepper.

    The Banh Mi Dog:

    The classic Banh Mi sandwich calls for a baguette, pickled veggies, and meat. So we’ve swapped in a hot dog and a bun for a fun summer twist on this Vietnamese treat.

    The Toppings:

    • Pickled Veggies
    • Green Chili, sliced
    • Mayo
    • Cilantro, chopped

    Make your own Pickled Veggies:

    • 56g Julienned Carrots
    • 227g Red Cabbage
    • 132g Mini Cucumber
    • 1.5 Tbsp Fish Sauce
    • 3 Tbsp Water
    • 1 Tsp Sugar
    • 1/2 Tsp salt.

    Cut cucumbers in half, lengthwise, then into 1/2-inch thick half-moons. Separate the carrots, cabbage, and cucumbers into 3 separate bowls. Heat a small pot over medium heat. When pot is hot, add fish sauce, water, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil and pour over each bowl of veggies. TIP: You can cook the veggies on the stove for a quicker result.

    The Greek Dog:

    This hot dog basically screams OPA!

    The Toppings:

    • Tzatziki
    • Tomatoes, 1/4 inch cubes
    • Cucumber, 1/4 inch cubes
    • Olives, chopped
    • Feta Cheese, crumbled

    Homemade Tzatziki :

    • 1/2 Cup Greek Yogurt
    • 1 Lemon, zested
    • 1 Tsp Lemon Juice
    • 2 Cloves Garlic, grated
    • 1 Tbsp Dill, finely chopped.

    In a medium bowl, stir lemon zest, lemon juice, garlic, and dill into the greek yogurt,

    The Mac & Cheese Dog:

    The Toppings:

    • Mac & Cheese
    • Bacon Bits
    • Chives, thinly sliced

    Homemade Mac & Cheese

    • 170g Cavatappi Pasta
    • 1/5 Cup Cheddar Cheese
    • 2 Tbsp Cream Cheese
    • 1 1/2 Tbsp Unsalted Butter

    Add the cavatappi to a large pot of boiling water. Cook, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the noodles are tender, 8-10 mins. When the cavatappi is done, reserve 1/4 cup pasta water (dbl for 4 ppl) and drain. Return the cavatappi to the same pot. Off the heat, add cheddar cheese, cream cheese, reserved pasta water and 1 1/2 tbsp butter (dbl for 4 ppl). Stir together, until a thick and creamy sauce forms, 2-3 mins. Season with salt and pepper.
